For about a year, hundreds of thousands of foreign and local sports enthusiasts as well as the Japanese government are looking forward to the exciting games and anticipating the success of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic games. The Land of the Rising Sun has been preoccupied in preparing for the much anticipated international sports events so as to ensure public safety, orderly traffic and smooth flow of the Olympic games.

In fact, the Olympics is deemed to further improve or boost the Japanese economy in terms of tourists and business investments. However, the Olympic hype which was previously felt in Japan among the energetic athletes, participants and spectators of the Olympic is now overshadowed by fear of the corona virus outbreak.

Amid the continuous spread of the highly contagious virus which originated in Wuhan, China, the World Health Organization has already declared the 2019 novel corona virus as a global pandemic as it has already caused a serious impact on a lot of countries all over the world including Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany, among others.

Less than six months prior, there are already a number of rumors circulating in Japan and various participating countries with regard to the postponement of this year’s Olympic games. In this regard, the organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic games have already started to conduct consultative meetings in order to discuss potential alternatives on how to go about the Olympic games this coming summer.

The Japanese government assured that they are ready when Olympic Games will push through this year. They hope that the Olympic games will promote consumer spending and the influx of tourists in the country.

On the other hand, one of the officials of the Tokyo organizing committee revealed that they are conducting meetings to look for various alternatives for this year’s Olympics. He said that “Finally, we have been asked to make a simulation in case of a postponement. We are making alternative plans – plan B, C, D – looking at different postponement time frames.”
