Nursing Care Industry in Japan Needs More Foreign Care Givers

Known to many countries across the globe, the Land of the Rising Sun is currently dealing with the effects of its aging population, low birth rate and vast decline in inward migration. One of the major impacts of this social issue is the chronic labor shortage suffered by various companies and firms in Japan particularly in fourteen industries that are identified to suffer the worst forms of workforce setback.


Among the fourteen abovementioned industries are nursing or care giving, construction, agriculture as well as food and service industry. In view of the tremendous increase in the number of senior citizens in Japan, the government through its National Diet has amended its Immigration policies that used to provide stringent requirements for foreign nationals who aspire to work and reside in Japan.

One of the notable changes introduced under the recent immigration control act is the new type of visa category known as the “Specified Skilled Worker” visa. Under this category, it is not necessary for care givers to have high educational attainment or a university or college degree to be able to work in Japan, it is sufficient that he or she has considerable working experience and knowledge in the area of care giving especially for senior citizens.


Moreover, care givers and nurses must be able to take and pass the industry specified examination to be conducted by the relevant sector plus obtain at least an “N4” level in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in order to make sure that they have at least a working knowledge and conversational level of the Japanese language to be able to work efficiently in Japanese domestic companies and to successfully integrate in the Japanese society in general without unwarranted difficulties.
