Japan is known worldwide as home to some of the most awe inspiring views and natural sceneries. Year in and year out, millions of international tourists across the globe look forward to visiting the country in order to go sightseeing and experience its unique culture. One of the most impressive aspects that can be observed in the Land of the Rising Sun is its dedication towards maintaining environmentally friendly and green technology.

During the recently concluded Group of 20 Leaders Summit held in Osaka, the resort town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was commended as a natural leader in promoting a clean and healthy environment. The said town has already been considered as a proponent of green and natural energy.

This year, Karuizawa aspires to meet the goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement particularly on climate change in order to effectively contribute in putting an end to the rise in global temperature by promoting long term renewable energy targets. The officials of Nagano prefecture discussed its long term energy goal of providing more electricity powered by renewable energy sources more specifically by using solar and hydropower energy.

According to Maseki Takashi, Nagano Prefecture’s Director for sustainable energy policy division, “We set a goal in 2013 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent by fiscal 2020, 30 percent by fiscal 2030, and 80 percent by fiscal 2050 compared to greenhouse gas levels in 1990.”

One of the most efficient ways to achieve this aspiration is by promoting the use of solar rooftops across the whole prefecture of Nagano. Their aim is to encourage the residents and commercial establishments in the area to make use of solar panels especially those that have a great potential to generate and maximize the use of solar power. Maseki Takashi further said that “There is also information on getting local government subsidies for installation costs.”
