Absolute Prohibition against Marijuana during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The upcoming 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has definitely stirred the interest and enthusiasm of hundreds of thousands of international tourists and sports enthusiasts from different parts of the globe, not to mention the Japanese fanatics who are also looking forward to the monumental sports event to be held in their very own capital city. The Tokyo Olympic organizing committee in cooperation with the Japanese government has already started to prepare measures to be implemented in the course of the much anticipated event in order to ensure public safety and smooth flow of activities during the entire Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

One of the policies to be undertaken by the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee is the ban on the possession and use of cannabis. Despite the fact that cannabis or marijuana has been decriminalized in a number of countries worldwide, the same is still contrary to the existing domestic laws of Japan.

Toshiro Muto, the Chief Executive Officer of the organizing committee released a news statement and said that, “There are countries and some regions around the world that have relaxed rules recently” But, “The use of cannabis constitutes a violation of law and that needs to be thoroughly communicated.” Thus, the committee has decided to inform the public in advance regarding the prohibition on the use of marijuana to be implemented against both locals and foreign tourists alike.

While marijuana is listed as one of the banned substances based on the World Anti-Doping Agency for participants during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Japanese government has imposed less stringent rules when it comes to smoking which is allowed in numerous restaurants and bars in Tokyo.  Nonetheless, the Olympic organizing committee has decided to enact stricter policies when it comes to smoking within the premises of the game venues. The committee clarified that smoking and use of vape shall not be allowed at all Olympic and Paralympic venues.
